TYPE

The ‘type’ indicates what may be expected of you in this role. There are three types of positions: Admin, Facility & Support, and Specialists. The type, along with the level will be used to determine your pay. Please review the (External Payscale) for more information. Your official pay will be included in your contract offer, but you are encouraged to use this document as a resource.

Level

The ‘level’ indicates the amount of responsibility associated with the role within the type. 1 is the highest level, meaning it holds the most responsibility for that type. For descriptions of each level within each type, please review (External Payscale). The level, along with the type will be used to determine your pay. Your official pay will be included in your contract offer.

Required Certifications

Required certifications will be listed for each position. Upon your acceptance, AGQ will compensate you for any certifications that are required of you that you do not currently possess. AGQ must have these certifications on file before the beginning of Staff Week. Please note, beginning in 2020, Chauffeur licenses for cabin trips or activity area trips will not be reimbursed.

Director of Operations

Overview

Work alongside the Directors to assist in the management of camp operations, care of facilities and oversight of program areas and support staff. Responsibilities may include programming and coordinating in/out day, overseeing GFS orders, supervising and evaluating facility & support staff, overnight and day trip logistics, assisting Side Leaders with overall behavior management of campers and staff as needed.

EXPECtations

  • Coordinate and take point on the execution of In/Out Day including programming.

  • Coordinate the transportation of campers to and from Ann Arbor and Camp.

  • Oversee and approve all GFS orders submitted by the Kitchen Director, Maintenance Director, and Store Director if necessary.

  • Conduct vehicle driving evaluations for all staff members who require the use of a vehicle for their roles

  • Supervise and evaluate Maintenance Staff, Kitchen Staff, Waterfront Staff and Trips Directors to develop and implement all facets of camp program activities

  • Participate as a member of the camp management team as needed to ensure the integration of program and property in order to deliver a program that meets the needs of campers and the camp mission. 

  • Assists the Head Counselors, Assistant Director and Camp Director with overall behavior management of campers and staff. 

  • Works with the assistant director and director to enforce staff discipline policies.

Leadership Director

The Director of the People! You’ll work to help improve efficiencies when it comes to younger staff development, leadership programs, and international staff on-boarding. You’ll assist with the interviewing, training, and mentorship of younger staff and be on-point to work alongside Head Male and Head Female as well as Inclusion Specialists to problem solve staff and camper conflicts and/or issues.

EXPECtations

  • Oversee teen programs and their directors (Senior Camper, LIT, CIT and J-Staff).

  • Supervise and Evaluate First-Year Full Summer and International Staff.

  • Develop resources to assist in the transition for new/rising J-Staff

  • Active mentor for younger staff, and resource to their respective directors.

  • On point for staff appreciation efforts throughout the summer.

  • Assists the Program Director in running sign ups.

  • May play a role in younger staff hiring and training during the off-season.

  • Continue to develop new camper and staff development programs with the Directors.

Program Director

You’ll oversee the development and implementation of all program activities, evening activities and special events. You’ll establish best practices within each activity area, including lesson planning, supply inventory and the delivery of program activities that are safe, fun and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.

EXPECtations

  • Supervise and evaluate all activity specialists and some cabin counselors.

  • Collect weekly lesson plans from staff, ensure supplies needs are met, and review themes and activities to establish best practices are met in each area.

  • Oversee all concentration programs including horseback riding, sailing, waterskiing and climbing.

  • Manage enrollments, cancellations, payments and authorizations using CampMinder for concentrations

  • On-point to run camper activity signups with assistance from the Leadership Director

  • Establish evening activity schedule weekly, and ensure each activity has someone planning it.

  • Take over planning of an activity if necessary.

  • Guide evening activity planners in the process of programming, execution, and clean-up as necessary.

  • On-point for campout preparations and planning.

  • Purchase program and office supplies & adhere to a strict budget.

  • Coordinate with other camps for Sports Days during two-week sessions.

Side Leaders

Also known as Head Female and Head Male, the Northside and Southside leaders are responsible for facilitating a positive environment for their respective sides, including both camper and staff experiences.

EXPECtations

  • Lead respective camp “side”.

  • Take strong role in staff bonding, training and morale.

  • Actively mentor staff members.

  • Lead camper experience - Lead flag, make announcements; responsible for opening campfire, and toilet talks.

  • Acts as next stop for dealing with conflict, homesickness, etc., when cabin counselors cannot solve camper or cabin issues.

  • Prepared to contact parents and assist cabin counselors with this process when required.

  • Responsibility for side cleanliness - makes and enforces bathroom cleaning schedule, camp sweeps, etc.

  • Act as liaison between lodge and cabin counseling staff.

  • Assist with staff evaluation preparation.

  • Work alongside the Inclusion Specialist(s) to promote best practices when it comes to camper experience.

  • On-point for conflict resolution within sides and between sides in relation to staff.

  • Work to promote a positive camper experience and strong staff dynamic.

Junior Staff Director (J-Staff)

Responsible for the training, leading, and mentoring of Junior Staff while also looking out for their safety and well-being. Plan and implement the Junior Staff program and help to prepare the J-Staff for the transition to full-summer staff.

  • Assist in leading J-Staff trainings during the spring.

  • Work as a pair to run the Junior Staff program.

  • Work as an active mentor to the Junior Staff to answer questions and prepare them for the transition to full-summer staff.

  • Lead J-Staff meetings during sessions to discuss the J-Staff experience.

  • Deliver regular check-ins with J-Staff members, one mid-employment evaluation and one end-of-employment evaluation for each J-Staff member.

Responsible for the training, leadership, safety and well-being of all Counselors In Training. Works as an active mentor and supervisor to the CITs, ensuring they understand their responsibilities and have the necessary tools to succeed in all aspects of the job.

EXPECtations

  • Work as a pair to run the Counselor-In-Training program.

  • Assist in leading CIT trainings during the spring.

  • Schedule all CITs into activity ares when they are not dishing

  • Work as an active mentor to the CITs to answer questions and make sure they are ready to take on junior staff roles.

  • Explain “dishing” and supervise dish room work and cleanliness.

  • Lead group CIT meetings during sessions to discuss the CIT experience.

  • Deliver one mid-session evaluation and one final-session evaluation to each CIT.

OVERVIEW

The Northside and Southside Inclusion Specialists work alongside the Northside and Southside leaders to address unique camper-related needs and accommodations. Alongside the Director and Assistant Director, they will evaluate the current camp climate for camper inclusion and work to develop best practices moving forward in order to make camp as inclusive as possible. The responsibilities of this role may evolve depending on the needs of the campers and staff.

EXPECtations

  • Work alongside your respected Side Leader to address camper-related issues.

  • Will receive information from the parents/Directors listing accommodations to be made for campers.

  • On-point for unique camper needs and accommodations including behavioral, physical, emotional, and mental.

  • Evaluate current practices for camper inclusion and development and encourage best practices moving forward.

  • On-point to communicate with Directors, staff, and parents to ensure a positive camp experience for campers requiring accommodations.

  • Work alongside the Leadership Director to create and maintain camper development initiatives.

  • Conduct mid-session surveys for camper experience, and provide suggestions for improvements relating to the results.

  • Assist in the training of homesickness, bedwetting, and bullying strategies

Plan and implement the Leaders-In-Training program during Sessions 2, 3 and 4. Apply basic youth development principles in working with LITs through communication, relationship development, and respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth. Help them to understand the role of a leader on camp and the progression from LIT to CIT.

EXPECtations

  • Work as a pair to run the Leaders-In-Training program during Sessions 2, 3 and 4.

  • Develop leadership curriculum for group of 18-40 campers (depending on enrollment) for each afternoon and evening.

  • Lead a team of other LIT counselors and live in cabin with LIT group.

  • Plan and execute LIT trip with oversight from the Leadership Director and Overnight Trips Director

  • Schedule, oversee and assign counselors for LIT Shadowing.

  • Plan and execute the Sunday/Monday LIT Brunch on Sleep-In Days.

  • Provide a comprehensive weekly schedule for all support staff.

Overview

Plan and implement the Senior Camper Program for campers entering 10th or 11th grade who are not in the LIT program during sessions 2, 3 and 4. Apply basic youth development principles in working with senior campers through communication, relationship development, and respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.

EXPECtations

  • Work as a pair to run the Senior Camper Program during Sessions 2, 3 and 4.

  • Develop curriculum for group of 20 campers to highlight the campers’ ‘final session’ at camp.

  • Responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding senior campers in their personal growth.

  • Lead a team of other Senior Camper counselors and live in cabin with the Senior Camper group.

  • Plan and execute Senior Camper trip with oversight from the Leadership Director and Overnight Trips Director

  • Provide a comprehensive weekly schedule for all support staff.

  • Ensure highest level of safety while on the trip and during Senior Camper activities.

Overview

Responsible for developing and delivering an Overnight Camping program that is appropriate for the age and ability of campers and ensures the highest level of safety and fun for reach participant. Manage the direction, supervision and organization of campers on two trips each two-week session. Oversee all overnight camping/trips at camp.

EXPECtations

  • Oversee the entire overnight tripping program at camp.

  • Prep and guide three 4-day introductory overnight hiking trips (Frodo) and three 1-day overnight camping trips (Big Wild) in Northern Michigan during Sessions 2, 3, and 4.

  • Ensure highest level of safety for all participants throughout all overnight camping programs.

  • Maintain camp hiking supplies, including tents and the trips equipment.

  • Oversee and approve all overnight trip itineraries, supplies, etc. (i.e. LIT Trip)

  • Oversee overnight trip spending and work within a tight budget for purchases.

  • Design and implement the new Outdoor Skill/Camping Activity Area during non-Frodo weeks.

  • Run sign-ups for the Outdoor Skill/Camping Activity Area

  • Transport campers and supplies using camp vehicle.

Barn DirectoR

  • Work alongside Trail Ride Specialist to ensure at least four trail rides take place per session.

Health Officer

Overview

Responsible for the overall function, safety, and success of the AGQ Health Center and camper and staff health and safety. Will work alongside other Health Staff to train and implement health-related best practices to support it camper health.

EXPECtations

  • Update Standing Orders and review yearly with Camp Physician & Nurse

  • Responsible for opening and closing Health Center facility for the season

  • Oversee general health and safety of all campers and staff.

  • Review all Health Forms for participants each session

  • Use the Inclusion Specialist as a resource for any outstanding health accommodations

  • First to respond in the case of an emergency.

  • Guide program staff to maintain a safe environment and oversee first aid.

  • Weekly First Aid Kit Upkeep for Activity Areas, Vehicles, Facilities, etc.

  • Read camper health forms before session and communicate with parents.

  • Collect, organize and distribute camper medication.

  • Coordinate camper health checks for Asst. Health Officers

  • Maintain meticulous records, adhering to all state and ACA standards for First Aid, Medicine Administration, Controlled Substances, Documentation Storage, Hospital Logs, and Parent Communication.

  • Uphold procedures related to Hospital/Doctor visits including parent communication, form distribution, etc.

  • Work alongside Trip Directors to set up trips for success in terms of safety and required medications.

  • Maintain meticulous inventory of supplies, medications, etc.

  • Maintain health center cleanliness, including quarantine wing and bathrooms.

  • Coordinate with camp doctor, local doctor and hospital if further care is needed.

Kitchen Director

Overview

Responsible for the overall function, safety, and success of the AGQ kitchen and food service. Expected to train kitchen staff and implement best practices when it comes to equipment use, cleanliness, and healthy food choices. Imperative that they ensure state and ACA standards are being met at all times, including paying close attention to food safety, special food needs, and allergy accommodations.

EXPECtations

  • Oversee camp foodservice.

  • Responsible for opening and closing kitchen facility for the season

  • Plan weekly menu and place orders for all food and supplies.

  • Take bi-weekly inventory of kitchen and pantry to assess ordering needs and maintain freshness of food served

  • Adhere to food service budget through ordering process.

  • Submit each order to the Director of Operations twenty-four hours in advance for approval (minor changes can be made leading up to the order deadline)

  • Train kitchen staff and setup and maintain systems and kitchen expectations.

  • Ensure maintenance, organization and cleanliness of the kitchen, pantry, and kitchen equipment, meeting all state and ACA standards.

  • Work alongside Maintenance Team to organize and store GFS orders twice each week

  • Lead kitchen staff to deliver each meal and clean-up processes post-meal.

  • Conduct two deep-cleans of the kitchen, pantry, grill area, and equipment twice per week.

  • Maintain high level of cleanliness on a daily basis.

  • Take point on overall food safety and healthy food choices for all meals.

  • Work alongside the Allergy Specialist on meal planning for special food needs, and allergies.

  • Live in director’s house or lodge.


Maintenance Director

Work alongside the Caretaker, Director of Operations, and Maintenance Team to ensure the upkeep and overall cleanliness of the AGQ grounds and facilities.

EXPECtations

  • Ensure day-to-day upkeep of camp facility.

  • Oversee Maintenance Staff alongside Caretaker and Director of Operations and work together to assign tasks daily to Maintenance Staff

  • Utilize and update Maintenance Request Form to maintain efficiencies within staff - assign tasks as necessary

  • Assist in facilitating daily Maintenance meetings in the morning, and oversee Maintenance staff progress

  • Execute trash pickup each day after cabin cleanup.

  • Assist kitchen staff in organizing the pantry 2x/week.

  • Maintain loading dock area and do recycling runs as necessary.

  • Maintain maintenance vehicle and maintenance shed.

  • Support activity staff as necessary.

  • Fulfill daily responsibilities each morning and assist in bigger projects in the afternoon.

  • Execute general repairs, including but not limited to cabin screens, ropes and doors; bathroom repairs; etc.

  • Understand responsibilities of role in emergency procedures.

store manager

Responsible for the overall function, safety, and success of the AGQ Camp Store and camper and staff health and safety. Will work alongside the Assistant Store Manager and CITs to train and implement best practices in the store.

EXPECtations

  • Manage camp store and inventory room.

  • Open and close camp store for the season.

  • Set up store accounts for each camper each session.

  • Staff camp store each evening during free time.

  • Communicate with parents via phone, email, or in-person with store-related questions

  • Actively mentor Counselors-in-Training in the store setting

  • Train and oversee staff working in the store to maintain best practices

  • Track staff store purchases and update Master Store Spreadsheet.

  • Charge accounts once every two days and update cards when parents add funding every day.

  • Keep inventory and work with camp director to place re-orders of merchandise.

  • Take a full inventory weekly and report back to the Camp Director with amounts and sizes

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the camp store and items stored.

  • Closing camp store camper accounts each session.

  • Submit orders to the Director of Operations for store drinks and snacks at least twenty four hours before deadline.

  • Oversee role of Assistant Store Manager and assign tasks as required.

  • Leave a plan for the Assistant Store Manager when on time-off.

  • Collaborate with directors on designing gear in the off-season if necessary

waterfront director

TYPE: ADMIN

  • Knowledge of waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing.

overview

Responsible for the overall function, safety, and success of the AGQ waterfront and the activities it supports. Will oversee lifeguard efficiencies, maintain the highest level of safety, and ensure the programs running on the waterfront are supported, safe, and engaging.

EXPECtations

  • Lead opening and closing of the waterfront facility for the season, as well as the daily maintenance and cleanliness of the facility and its equipment throughout the summer.

  • Responsibility for evaluating lifeguard skills through in-service and observation and maintaining high level of safety.

  • Execute swim checks for campers on the first day of each session and as needed for swim club completion.

  • Assign buddy tags for all staff and campers and maintain the buddy board.

  • Maintain equipment and supplies for all waterfront activity areas.

  • Ensure all equipment is up to standard and accessible in the event of an emergency.

  • Schedule one guard in-service/week for all guards.

Works as a staff member in a cabin to fulfill our mission and youth development initiatives. All staff members whose expectations include ‘Also works as a cabin counselor’ are responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of the cabin counselor.

EXPECtations

  • Senior Counselors: Ages 18+. Junior Counselors: Age 17.

  • Work with 1-2 co-counselors to lead a group of 10-12 campers.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of campers at camp.

  • Work to develop cabin unity, team building and friendships among the campers.

  • Help campers work together and grow throughout their time at camp.

  • Ensure their basic needs are met and they are accounted for at all times.

  • Work in activity areas in the daytime.

  • Play a part in evening activity planning, all-day planning, special events, free times, etc.

  • Must attend staff week training.


Lifeguard

Those with a valid lifeguard certification will work on the waterfront up to four camper activity hours of each day. They will be programmed into Free Swim, and may be asked to assist in running Polar Bear in the mornings. Participates in lifeguard in-services and takes point in emergency procedures on the waterfront.

Barn Hand

The Barn Hand stipend will be programmed into activity hours each day at the AGQ Barn. Assist in horseback riding lessons during each activity hour you are programmed and maintain high levels of safety. Must complete the pre-camp barn training with the Barn Director. Support in the feeding, care and preparation of horses and the barn facility. May assist with Trail Rides. 

Belay Certified

The Belay Certification is acquired by completing the Wall Training pre-staff week. Those who have this certification will be programmed to work at least 2 hours at the AGQ Wall and Zip Line.

maintenance block

Staff members who are assigned to a Maintenance block will work alongside the Maintenance Team for two hours each day. They will complete daily responsibilities including stocking the bath-houses, trash collection, and GFS orders as instructed.
